This newsletter brings you a selection of news and views that will keep you informed of the ‘what’s what?’ and ‘who’s who’ in franchising. We hope you enjoy it and are looking forward to your feedback.
Shortly after commemorating its first birthday, www.whichfranchise.co.za had more reasons to celebrate. It was named South Africa’s most visited website for information on franchising. This was the finding of the people at the respected search engine www.google.co.za which tracks this sort of thing. But although the news cheered us up immensely, we were not surprised. We were aware that page visits had risen from a rather modest 12 000 during the first month after the website’s launch to an impressive 79 500 during August 2007, and knew that it would only be a matter of time until we would occupy the leading spot.
The listings of our featured franchisors received the most visits, with the pages providing basic information on all qualified franchise opportunities being the next most-popular. We are equally proud of the fact that with a combined subscriber base exceeding 15 000, our two newsletters have become a force to be reckoned with as well. And then there is the “Ask an expert” section; it continues to attract hundreds of questions each month. We take great pride in the fact that each question is dealt with individually and answered promptly.

Everyone knows that we in South Africa live in a multi-cultural society, no surprise here. But if recent developments in Germany’s labour force are anything to go by, then this situation is even more pronounced in that country.
According to a report in franchise-net.de, McDonald’s Germany employs over 52 000 people drawn from about 120 different countries around the globe. McDonald’s sees this as an advantage – the company says that the ethnic diversity of its workforce strengthens its organisation and contributes to its success. Read more…
While in the not too recent past, McDonald’s prided itself on the fact that the look and feel of a McDonald’s restaurant was the same no matter where in the world you would visit one, this is changing fast, and in ways that would have been considered unthinkable, almost sacrilegious, a few short years ago. Earlier this month, the Franchise and Business Opportunities Expo 2007 took place at the Gallagher exhibition centre, Midrand. This followed hard on the heels of the first such event presented in Cape Town in August.
Although the Johannesburg event, which attracted over 7 000 visitors, was reasonably successful, some expressed disappointment that many of the big-name franchisors were absent. We expected that and think that the time has come to acknowledge two irrefutable facts…Read more…
