www.whichfranchise.co.za named South Africa’s top franchise resource

Shortly after celebrating its first birthday, www.whichfranchise.co.za was named South Africa’s most visited franchise website. This is according to a report issued by the respected search engine www.google.co.za, which tracks this sort of thing. Indeed, page visits rose from a rather modest 12 000 during the first month after the website’s launch to an impressive 79 500 during August 2007.

Pages offering information on franchise opportunities receive the most visits, followed by pages providing information on franchise related questions. With a combined subscriber base exceeding 10 000, our newsletters have become extremely popular as well, and the “Ask an expert” attracts hundreds of questions each month.

F&BOE 2007

FBOE

Earlier this month, the Franchise and Business Opportunities Expo 2007 took place at the Gallagher exhibition centre, Midrand. Institutional investors and multi-unit operators, until recently the exception rather than the norm, are entering the franchise sector in growing numbers and are actively pursued by franchisors, especially in the USA. We see this as a positive development because it attracts investors into the franchise sector. Read more…

A second career beckons

Over 50

Advances in the science of nutrition and medical care, combined with lifestyle changes, have seen to it that today’s 70-year olds are often fitter than 60-year olds were back in the 1950s. Many are sufficiently fit to work past the traditional pension age but rigid rules and prejudices sabotage that. And in any event, after 40 years in the same job, most people are tired of working for a boss and want a change. Read more…

Cell phone franchises continue to prosper

Mobile Phone

According to an article in Business Report, cell phone franchising continues to boom. Franchised networks include Vodacom, Nashua Mobile, MTN, Cell C and Autopage Cellular. Nashua Mobile MD Mark Taylor comments that while people think that the market has been saturated, his company has opened over 150 stores. They deal in cell phones, SMS services, Internet access and data packages. Their broadband user base alone has grown to over 600 000.

Setting up one of their stores costs in the region of R500 000, with the company making a substantial contribution. Vodacom has over 900 stores but expansion continues at a rate of at least 20 new stores per annum. Seems that this is a sector worth looking into…
