whichfranchise.co.za - Franchise Update

Welcome

A warm welcome to the December edition of our newsletter. As usual, it is packed with information that will get you thinking towards turning your dream of becoming an entrepreneur to reality. Following an appeal to act on your dream, we explain why some of you don't receive answers to queries addressed to our panel of experts. Next, we explain what it really means to acquire a franchise from network that is based overseas. We then tell you why it is better to live in Johannesburg than in Nairobi , especially if you are a burger lover, and conclude with a selection — and our expert panel's answers — of questions we received over the past month.

The time to act is now!

With the New Year just around the corner, the time is right to make a New Year's resolution with a difference.

“During 2007, I am going to throw off the shackles of employment and start my own business!”

Sticking to it You may have made this, or a very similar, resolution before but never acted on it, so how is it going to be different this time round? Well, this time you are actually going through with your plans!

We will show you the why and the how; the rest is up to you. Read more…

We love to help, but…

This and every other issue of our newsletter concludes with an invitation to write to us if you have any franchise-related questions. We promise that we will respond promptly, and we pride ourselves on adhering to this promise. Recently, however, this did not always happen, and although it may look this way, it isn't our fault.

People who contact us through our website need to provide us with their email address, as stipulated on the relevant page. The questions-and-answers system is web-based and does not automatically record your email address. Unless you complete the form, we have no way of responding.

The grass isn't always greener…

It happens quite frequently that we receive enquiries from would-be franchisees who want to find out more about overseas concepts. If the brand is established in South Africa , no problem, we simply put them in touch with the local master franchisee. The issue becomes much more complicated, however, if local representation does not exist.

Of course, given this miracle called the Internet, it's easy enough to find the contact details of any foreign franchisor, no matter where in the world its head office may be located. So, if this is not the real problem, what is? Read more…

The Big Mac Index 2006

A recent edition of the Sunday Times reports on outcome of a study that is carried out annually and released under the heading “The Big Mac Index”. It tracks how many minutes of work it takes an average wage earner to earn enough to pay for a Big Mac. Incidentally, the Big Mac was chosen as a benchmark because of its universal availability. Questions and answers

Q: Six months ago, I signed a franchise agreement that is valid for three years. I am not too happy with the way things are going and am looking forward to the day when the agreement ends.

Given this scenario, you'll understand my dismay when the franchisor asked me to sign a modified agreement that would be valid for five years. Am I compelled to sign? Read more…
