Hi there, and welcome to this issue of the whichfranchise.co.za newsletter for prospective franchisees. The mere fact that you have subscribed tells us that you are seriously thinking about changing your life for the better by investing in a franchise. Stick with it — it beats working for a boss by a considerable margin and in this edition, we'll tell you why. We will also tell you how to spot a franchisor from hell — and avoid his advances. As usual, we conclude by printing some of the most interesting questions our panel of experts had to deal with.
In this fast-moving and highly competitive world of ours, the notion of one job for life liked to employment security is as dead as the dodo. Those who fail to adapt to this new reality will find themselves increasingly marginalised, perhaps searching for a job that no longer exists. The answer is to start a business of your own but to do so from scratch and without significant backing is not for the fainthearted.
We had a stand at the recently held FBOE 2006 (see report in the Grapevine section of our website) and used the opportunity to talk to people from all walks of life, but especially franchisors and prospective franchisees. We met representatives of many rock-solid networks and are happy to confirm that as far as South Africa 's franchise scene is concerned, all is well with the world! But there is an exception to everything and in our minds one encounter stands out for all the wrong reasons. As promoters of ethical franchising, we feel duty-bound to relate it to you.
The Aids epidemic and other scourges of modern-day living notwithstanding, people live longer and more productive lives than ever before — or do they? Fact is that average life expectancy has increased dramatically and few will dispute that today's senior citizens are a more sprightly lot than were those of the same age just one generation ago. This notwithstanding, many companies insist on sending people into retirement when they turn 58.
The popularity of our email column continues to grow and the following are just a few of the questions our panel of experts answered.

Mugg & Bean — Coffee themed restaurants
Uniglobe Travel — largest single brand travel franchise in the world
Weizter — kitchen designs
