Welcome to the August edition of our newsletter. As usual, it is packed with information on various aspects of franchising. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed putting it together for you.
We begin with a real life case study involving boats, kitchen cabinets and people who make money while having fun doing so. With the Franchise & Business Opportunities Expo almost upon us, we provide an overview of this exciting event.
Next, we alert you to a peace offering made by SARS. Leniency shown by the taxman is indeed rare, so, if you are the owner of a small business and have been hiding something from SARS, now is the time to come clean!
Feedback received from readers suggests that during the short time since its launch, the question-and-answer segment has become a firm favourite. We continue this segment by printing questions posed by visitors to our website and the answers given by our resident experts.
To finish off this edition, let us reiterate that this is your newsletter. We want you to shape its content so keep the emails rolling in. Those among you who have written to us in the past will know that we respond promptly to queries, usually within 24 hours. And please remember: there is no such thing as a stupid question! For free advice on any issue relating to franchising, or just to make a point of interest with a franchise theme, write to experts@whichfranchise.co.za
Brent Gray gained his early working experience in the boat building industry. He liked being his own boss but found it difficult to manage a business whose fortunes were difficult to predict.
After much soul-searching, Brent decided to become involved in the kitchen and cupboard supply business. What attracted him to the sector was South Africa 's well-documented backlog of affordable housing. Brent did an in-depth investigation of the market and its leading players. Eventually, he came to the conclusion that the sector was indeed sound and Weizter offered the best overall fit.
The Franchise & Business Opportunities Expo takes place from 7-10 September 2006 at Gallagher Estate, Midrand. Opening hours are from 10h00-18h00 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10h00 –17h00 on Sunday. Admission fee is R30.
The expo showcases close to 100 exhibitors including business opportunities, franchise offers, banks and information providers. But there is more! Whichfranchise.co.za will be there – our stand adjoins the Absa stand so you can't miss us.
If you operate a small business and you have been less than diligent with your obligations vis-à-vis SARS, now is the time to put matters right. Although tax evasion was a recognised national sport in the past, it is becoming increasingly dangerous to continue this practice. Anyone who had in-depth dealings with SARS over the past few years will confirm that this organisation has become a highly efficient tax collection machine. Overruns in tax collection figures, announced with monotonous regularity by the Minister of Finance, are ample proof of this.
Under this heading, whichfranchise provides answers to questions asked by our readers. We have selected some which we consider to be of general interest and reproduce them herewith, together with the answers provided by our panel of experts.
Plastic Box, a successful retail chain in New Zealand , has plans to expand into South Africa with the brand House Ware World and is looking for a master franchise in SA. The chain is focused on home ware and storage solutions at affordable prices.
The South African master franchise will have the opportunity to expand the business on a franchised basis. With the ever growing residential market, there is much potential for stores that focus on home ware and storage solutions for the smaller modern home.
